Try as it might, the weather could not stop Nyora Raceway from putting on a successful show on Saturday night March the 24th with the club managing to fit in a complete race card despite the weather during the day having some effect on the track condition prior to racing starting and then the rain again trying to interfere during the night, the volunteers and officials persevered and ran a successful nights entertainment.
Crash and Bash was what the crowd had come to see and the Crash and Bash association along with all club classes did a great job of running through the meeting quickly to avoid any potential further rain.
A tremendous Crash and Bash final had the crowd excited as cars were spun, crunched and even coming stuck together whilst at the front the likes of NathanTaylor, Rob Disher, Rob Bushell, Mark Hebblethwaite, Andrew Corlett, Grant Attewell and Brad Warren weaved their way around and under cars they were passing, for Brad Warren it seemed every time he was going to put a pass on Corlett, he found Anthony Segond in the way.
Eventually, Disher ran down and caught up to Taylor before putting a last lap passing move to take the lead and the win from Taylor, Bushell, Corlett and Warren. Earlier Taylor had done everything right to win all three of his heat races and qualify as the top driver in the field. Matt Haby, Mark Hebblethwaite and Disher won the others.
In Junior Standard Saloon racing where the drivers were competing in round four of the Boost 2 Drive series, Lewis Williams a Nyora registered racer took the feature win in fine style from Deegan Benson and Jack Yeoman’s with Blake Smith finishing in fourth place in the final. Williams bookended the qualifying heats by winning the first and the third, with Benson winning the second heat.
In SSA (Speedway Sedan Australia) Juniors Jack Ramsdale who has been in great form recently consistently finishing in top five results in big races, took the home track victory ahead of Logan Mair a rookie racer for this season who finished ahead of Zoe Young who fought back well from being sent to the rear of the field after contact with another competitor. In Fourth place in the final was Kiarna Barton with Natalie O’Donnell in fifth spot.
Young won the first heat when after being in the lead of the race Ramsdale tapped her and she was impeded, the stewards took the win off Ramsdale and Young was declared the winning. Ramsdale then won the next two heat races.
Ladies Standard Saloon racing finished with Trish Dike taking a confidence boosting win a couple of weeks ahead of the Victorian title for Ladies that will be held in West Gippsland after she earlier had two heat wins. Dike defeated Hayley Hutchins and Allana Ardley who won the first heat.
The Sports Sedan final was won by Lee Beach ahead of Ray Gould proudly boasting a new set of tyres on his Cortina. Victorian Champion Jamie Paull who earlier won two of the three qualifiers after arriving at the track late and missing the first, was declared third after his car over heated with a lap to go and pulled infield leaving just Beach and Gould. The race was robbed of Marcus Reddecliffe who suffered some big damage after a crash in heat racing and that took a little extra sting out of the final.
Mark Miles won the Standard Saloon final defeating Stephen Douglas, Justin Hutchins, Garry Charles and Clint Walkinshaw. Douglas started to close in a little on Miles in the closing laps, whilst Miles wasn’t overly stretching himself. In fact after a tangle during the race whilst passing a slower competitor, Miles thought he might be penalised, luckily for him the stewards had other ideas.
One of the earlier highlights was veteran 70+ aged racer John Watson winning the first heat deserving of a standing ovation. Miles won the second and Andrew Dike the third heat however he bombed out in the final with mechanical issues.
In the Unlimited Sedans Alan Stockdale had a victory in his first season back behind the wheel after a long layoff from the sport. Stockdale was stoic out front and hit his marks lap after lap to take the win ahead of Lennie Bonicci who won the first qualifier of the day, Warwick Taylor who won the other two qualifiers and Sean Lister. Lister crossed the line third however was penalised by the stewards for an earlier race incident.
Nyora returns with action on April the 21st including the return of the Wingless Sprints and Compact Speedcars are scheduled also.
